Accra: The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has urged the government to address the pressing issues impacting food production in Ghana. The Union said the foremost among these challenges was the menace of illegal mining, or 'galamsey.'According to Ghana News Agency, a statement issued in Accra by Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe, the General Secretary of GAWU, commended the hardworking men and women whose efforts ensure that the nation was fed and nourished during the celebrations of the 40th National Farmers' Day. This year's celebration was on the theme: 'Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security.' The statement also dedicated to honouring the remarkable contributions of farmers, food processors, food vendors, and everyone in the agricultural value chain. The statement noted the numerous challenges faced by these individuals, including post-harvest losses, unfair pricing, inadequate access to inputs, the severe impacts of climate change, and now the galamsey menace. It emphasiz ed that these issues demand urgent attention to uplift farmers from poverty and ensure the improvement of their livelihoods. The practice of 'Galamsey' continues to threaten rural communities, polluting water sources and compromising the land farmers depend on. The statement highlighted the devastating effects of 'Galamsey' on agriculture, reducing productivity and jeopardizing food security. It called on the government to fulfill its promises to organized labor by taking decisive actions to curb 'galamsey,' noting that addressing this issue would not only protect the land but also secure the health and safety of farmers and their families.GAWU urged the government to prioritize occupational safety and health in the agricultural sector, emphasizing that farming is a critical business requiring protective measures for those who labour in the fields. Promoting decent work for farmers was deemed essential to safeguard their well-being and dignity. The Union advocated for the adoption of climate-smart agricul tural practices, provision of quality and drought-resistant seeds, soil and land management, integrated pest management, and an expansion in irrigation infrastructure in collaboration with the Irrigation Development Authority to enhance food production and secure the nation's food supply. It also stressed the need for the government to regulate pesticide usage, ensuring the safe and responsible use of pesticides transported into towns to protect farmers, their children, and all Ghanaians from potential chemical hazards. The statement extended sincere thanks to agricultural extension officers who provide crucial education and support to farmers across Ghana. Their dedication was recognized as vital in improving farming practices and bringing the nation closer to food security and self-sufficiency.As the nation celebrates the achievements of its farmers, GAWU called for a recommitment to producing what is consumed and consuming what is grown, standing resolute in its mission to protect farmers and the agents of change who work with them to enhance productivity and ensure fair and decent treatment for their work.
