Galamsey Operator Sentenced for Theft at Tarkwa Drinking Bar

Tarkwa: A 32-year-old galamsey operator held for unlawful entry, causing damage, and stealing has been sentenced to two years imprisonment in hard labor by the Tarkwa District Court One. Amadu Amidu, also known as ‘Attah,’ pleaded guilty to all the charges leveled against him and was convicted accordingly.

According to Ghana News Agency, the prosecutor, Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh, informed the court, presided over by Mr. Charles Owusu Nsiah, that the complainant, Daniel Cobbinah, is a businessman residing in Cyanide, a suburb of Tarkwa. On November 28, 2024, around 3:20 am, Cobbinah received a phone call reporting that someone was seen entering his drinking bar at the Tarkwa Railway Station.

Upon arriving at the scene, Cobbinah found several people gathered around his bar and discovered that the trap door leading to the bar had been damaged. With the assistance of local residents, Cobbinah apprehended Amidu and brought him to the Railway Station police post.

The prosecution revealed that the trap door, valued at GHS500, and four jackpot machines worth GHS14,000 were damaged. Additionally, coins amounting to GHS800, which were inside the machines, had been stolen. Cobbinah lodged an official complaint with the police, leading to Amidu’s detention for further investigation.

During his caution statement, Amidu claimed he gave the coins from the jackpot machine to Cobbinah, which the complainant denied. Following the investigation, Amidu was charged with the offense and brought before the court.
