Galamsey Operator Remanded for Alleged Rape of 56-Year-Old Woman

Tarkwa: Vitus Nsore, a 24-year-old galamsey operator, has been remanded into police custody by the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court One for allegedly raping a 56-year-old woman in her room. His plea was not taken, and he is to appear in court on Friday, February 28, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, Police Sergeant Douglas Addae, prosecuting, informed the court presided over by Mr. Charles Owusu Nsiah that the complainant, a farmer, lived at Amoanda with Nsore. On February 9, around 0100 hours, while the complainant was asleep, the community experienced a power outage due to a heavy rainstorm. Nsore allegedly used the blackout to enter the complainant's room quietly and violently attacked her.

The prosecution narrated that Nsore subjected the complainant to torture and beatings, covered her mouth with his hand, and forcibly had unprotected sex with her. Afterward, fearing exposure, Nsore allegedly decided to kill the complainant. He locked her in the room and informed her that he was going home to bring his knife.

The complainant, despite being weak and helpless, managed to escape through the window and screamed for help. Anthony Kwofie and the complainant's children responded to her cries and searched for Nsore, but he was not immediately found.

Nsore was later arrested by the complainant's children, with assistance from concerned citizens of Amoanda, and taken to the Huni-Valley police station. The complainant reported the matter, leading to Nsore's re-arrest and detention. The prosecutor stated that Nsore was subsequently taken to the Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) Office for further investigation.

The complainant received a medical form to attend the hospital for treatment and returned it to the police, endorsed by a medical officer at the Tarkwa Municipal hospital.
