GAF and JAH Foundation Celebrate Centenary of World War II Veteran

Accra: The Ghana Armed Forces and the Joseph Ashitey Hammond (JAH) Foundation have launched the centenary celebration of World War II veteran, Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Joseph Ashitey Hammond. The decorated veteran, who was promoted from a Private to Warrant Officer Class 1 by the GAF in 2020 for his achievements, turns 100 years on May 10, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, at a press launch at Burma Camp in Accra, Mr Joshua Hammond, son of Ex-WO1 Hammond and spokesperson for the family, stated that the celebration aimed to pay tribute to the legacy and contributions of the 'sole surviving witness to the historic February 28 crossroad shooting, both on the battlefield and in post-war Ghana. Mr Hammond emphasized that the centenary celebration is a tribute to his father's legacy and a call to honor the sacrifices of veterans, ensuring their stories are preserved for future generations.

The three-month-long celebration will begin with a walk on Thursday, February 27, and will be climaxed with a birthday dinner on May 10, 2025. Key highlights of the celebration include a series of events such as state recognition, international engagements, and a grand centenary dinner to honor the veteran's life. A special publication documenting the remarkable journey, service, and impact of Ex-WO1 Hammond on Ghana and the Commonwealth will also be unveiled. Public engagements and advocacy activities will promote national awareness of the role of Ghanaian veterans in world history and advocate for veteran welfare.

Mr Hammond called for national and global recognition of WO1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond's legacy and invited the media and public to join in amplifying the celebration. He urged support for veterans, acknowledging their sacrifice for peace and stability in the country.

Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Felix Adom Asante, Deputy Chief of Staff of Administration at the General Headquarters, praised the achievements of the veteran and his contributions to the nation. He highlighted that the celebration would not only honor Ex-WO1 Hammond's legacy but also recognize the sacrifices of all veterans for global peace. The military high command expressed appreciation to the Hammond Family and pledged GAF's support for the celebration.
