Accra: Mr. Yakubu Faharudeen, a former Acting General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has expressed confidence in President John Dramani Mahama’s plans to use the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industries as a vehicle for economic transformation.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Faharudeen mentioned that Mahama’s policies, particularly in agriculture and industrialisation, could provide the essential boost to drive Ghana’s economy forward. He emphasized that agribusiness remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy, and President Mahama’s vision to reform key agricultural structures was commendable.
Mr. Faharudeen drew parallels to Dr. Nkrumah’s efforts to link trade and agriculture, noting the potential benefits of investing in agriculture due to the country’s arable lands. He expressed optimism about Mahama’s attempts to revive this focus, stating that such efforts could significantly accelerate economic growth.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he highlighted the importance of prioritising reforms in agriculture, particularly around value addition for exportation. He urged all stakeholders, including the private sector, to collaborate with the government to ensure the success of these initiatives.
He noted the timely appointment of ministers and the importance of reducing the number of ministries, which he believed demonstrated a clear understanding of the structural challenges facing the country.
Mr. Faharudeen praised President Mahama for prioritising youth inclusion in key ministerial positions, describing it as a progressive step toward empowering the next generation and addressing Ghana’s development challenges.
Additionally, he applauded the President for his dedication to gender inclusivity through the appointment of women to key leadership roles, which he believes will boost women’s confidence in their quest for representation in national decision-making processes.
He also remarked on President Mahama’s previous leadership experiences, expressing confidence that Mahama had learned from past mistakes and was prepared to lead the country to greater heights.
