London: Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with raping two women. The Metropolitan Police stated that the Ghanaian international faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, linked to alleged offences between 2021 and 2022.
According to Ghana News Agency, Partey's lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, mentioned that he "denies all the charges against him" and added that Partey "welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name." Partey was charged shortly after his departure from the north London club. The police further noted that the sexual assault allegation involves a third woman.
Partey is accused of committing two counts of rape against one woman and three counts against another. The police revealed that they first received a report of a rape allegation in February 2022. Ms. Wiltshire stated that the 32-year-old has "fully co-operated with the police and CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) throughout their three-year investigation."
Currently residing in Hertfordshire, Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation, emphasized the importance of supporting the women who have come forward and urged anyone affected by the case or with information to contact the investigation team.
Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020, in a transfer valued at approximately £45 million ($61.4 million). The defensive midfielder began his career with the Spanish club in 2012, making 188 appearances and going out on loan to Mallorca and Leganes. He played 35 matches for Arsenal in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals.
Additionally, Partey has represented Ghana in over 50 matches, participating in events like the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. He left Arsenal following the expiration of his contract. Arsenal released a statement saying, "The player's contract ended on 30 June. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case."
