Accra: Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, has called on young people to seize the opportunities offered by the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) to implement innovative solutions aimed at transforming Accra and protecting the environment. He emphasized the importance of these actions in light of past environmental challenges.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Vanderpuije referenced the devastating floods of June 3, 2015, as a critical warning of potential future disasters if urgent climate action is neglected. Speaking at an event organized by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to mark International Earth Day, themed ‘Our Power, Our Planet,’ Vanderpuije highlighted the need for a proactive approach to climate change.
The event also served to announce the winners of the second phase of the YCAF. Vanderpuije recalled the tragic events of nearly a decade ago when Accra was brought to a standstill due to severe flooding, stressing the immediate threat posed by climate ch
ange. As the Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee of Parliament, he warned of the ongoing risk of climate-induced disasters and urged youth to lead climate action efforts.
Mr Douglas N.K. Annoful, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, expressed gratitude to Vanderpuije for his dedication to the Assembly and climate change issues. Annoful noted that after the launch of the second phase of the YCAF in March 2025, the assembly initiated processes to select beneficiaries for the fund. He emphasized the importance of effective implementation for continued success in future phases.
Mr Ben Smith, Acting Project Lead, revealed the selected projects for implementation, which include initiatives like promoting the Accra Climate Action Plan through creative mediums, urban gardening, climate advocacy through educational activities, and sustainable transportation solutions. A total of 58 applications were received for the fund, demonstrating significant interest and engagement from the
youth.
