Forestry Commission Leads Tree Planting in Anloga for World Environment Day

Accra: The Forestry Commission in Anloga organized a tree-planting exercise at Avete D.A Basic School to mark World Environment Day. The initiative underscored the vital role trees play in sustaining a healthy environment by providing benefits such as oxygen production, soil conservation, and habitat creation for wildlife.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Eric Atta Kusi, Manager of Operations at the Forestry Commission, stated that the purpose of the exercise was to raise awareness and educate the public on the critical benefits trees offer to both humans and animals. He emphasized that by planting trees, individuals contribute to mitigating climate change effects and promoting sustainable development.

Mr. Kusi further explained that the destruction of trees and environmental degradation could lead to severe consequences such as biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. He called for collective action to protect the environment and promote sustainable practices. As part of the event, the Commission distributed tree species like Mahogany, Coconut, and royal palm, known for their durability and ecological benefits such as shade, timber, and food. Free seedlings are available for collection at various Forestry Commission offices nationwide.

Mr. Hope Avuletey, Assistant Manager of the Forestry Commission at Anloga, highlighted the commission's initiative to encourage community involvement in tree planting and environmental protection. He urged individuals to take responsibility for their environment and participate in tree-planting activities. The commission has embarked on planting approximately 20,000 trees across two districts from June 5 to 30 to restore degraded landscapes.

Mr. Avuletey stressed the importance of public participation in protecting trees for a healthy environment and the numerous benefits, including air and water filtration, soil conservation, and climate regulation. He added that the Forestry Commission plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable forest management and environmental protection. Promoting environmental awareness is key to creating a greener and more sustainable environment for everyone.

The theme for the Green Ghana Revolution was 'Tree For Life, Restoration of Initiative 2025.'
