Flags at Half-Mast; Hohoe MCE, Residents Mourn Victims of Helicopter Crash

Hohoe: The Ghana national flags in the Hohoe Municipality are flying at half-mast in honour of the eight people who died in a helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

According to Ghana News Agency, all eight persons lost their lives in the crash involving a helicopter on national assignment when the unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The deceased include prominent figures such as Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Defence Minister; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation; Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture; and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, the Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former Ashanti Regional Minister.

The other victims were Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. Mr. Prosper Kumi, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), expressed the deepest condolences on behalf of the Assembly, acknowledging the tragic loss as a national tragedy.

Mr. Kumi urged residents to observe the three-day national mourning declared in honour of the deceased officials and soldiers. He encouraged the community to participate in paying tribute to the memory of the victims. Some residents, still in disbelief, shared their initial skepticism, thinking the news might be fake. However, many commended the government's decision to provide the victims with a state burial.

Mr. Paul Adu, a local trader, remarked that the death of these officials should serve as a prompt to address the issue of illegal mining, known as galamsey, in the country.
