Fisheries Minister Inaugurates Committee to Develop Curriculum for Anomabo Fisheries College

Accra: Madam Emelia Arthur, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, has inaugurated a Ministerial Committee to develop an academic curriculum for the Anomabo Fisheries College in the Central Region. She tasked the Committee with creating a curriculum informed by industry needs and adhering to international best practices, linking educational outcomes to the practical demands of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Minister highlighted that the College, initiated in 2012 by the late President Prof John Evans Atta Mills to enhance the expertise of emerging professionals, had faced challenges over the years due to financial constraints and low contractor capacity. President John Dramani Mahama, upon assuming office in 2025, committed to completing critical infrastructure and operationalizing the College, with GhS 80 million allocated for phase 1 of the project.

The Committee is tasked with reviewing existing models of fisheries and aquaculture training institutions in Ghana and abroad, ensuring trainees are equipped to meet industry challenges. It will determine an appropriate name for the College and define its vision, mission, and core values. The Committee will propose an organizational and governance structure, identify priority academic programs, and develop a draft curriculum framework.

Additionally, the Committee will recommend staffing requirements and suggest strategies for industry linkage, internship, and community engagement. It is also tasked with proposing mechanisms for quality assurance, accreditation, continuous curriculum review, and outlining resources and infrastructure needs. The Committee has two months to submit a final report with recommendations to the Ministry.

Members of the Committee include Madam Emelia Arthur as Chairperson, Mr. John Quayson, Prof Benjamin Campion, Prof Elvis Nyarko, Mr. Eric Baah, and several other distinguished professionals from various institutions.

Madam Arthur stated that Phase I of the project includes a two-storey Classroom Block, Administration Block, Laboratory Block, Hostel Block, and staff quarters, which are at various stages of completion. The aim is to have these components completed and operational by the first quarter of 2026 for the first intake of students.
