FDA and Aflao Border Officials Arrest Woman with Fake Aphrodisiacs

Aflao: The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) officials, in collaboration with other agencies at the Aflao border, have apprehended Hawa Fuseini, a passenger on a Nagode Transport vehicle, for carrying contraband aphrodisiacs. The vehicle, registered as TG 5846 BN, was stopped on its route from Lome-Togo to Accra.

According to Ghana News Agency, the arrest occurred during a joint examination at the Vehicle Examination section of the Aflao Border around 1730 hrs. The officials discovered non-compliant products such as Viagra (sildenafil), Spanish gold fly, diazepam groups, Rohypnol, and tramadol red concealed in a Cream Cracker biscuits carton. The suspect, identified as Hawa Fuseini on her Ghana Card but listed as 'Assindo Awa' on the bus manifest, was detained by the authorities.

Mr. Gorden Akurugu, Volta Regional Director of the FDA, explained that the concealment suggested an attempt to smuggle the unregistered drugs into the country through unauthorized channels. He emphasized that these drugs are not permitted to cross inland borders and should only enter through designated ports like Kotoka International Airport and Tema Harbour.

Mr. Akurugu advised importers to adhere to regulations to avoid legal repercussions. He also urged neighboring countries to prevent criminal activities at their borders, highlighting that vigilance and collaboration are key in combating the smuggling of sub-standard drugs.

The FDA has intensified its border operations, implementing 24-hour inspections to curb the illegal drug trade. The suspect, Hawa, is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, May 12, 2025.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eric Bamfo, Aflao District Police Crime Officer, confirmed the arrest and the upcoming court date.
