Electrochem Ghana Urges Participation in Tributor Scheme Amidst Encroachment Concerns

Accra: Electrochem Ghana Limited, the company responsible for salt mining operations in the Ada Songor lagoon, has called on local groups to engage actively with its tributor scheme, offering an opportunity for business growth while urging the public to respect operational boundaries to prevent illegal encroachments.

According to Ghana News Agency, Electrochem Ghana emphasized the importance of its evaporators in maintaining the flow of brine necessary for salt production. The company highlighted that unauthorized entry into these areas disrupts operations and violates the Minerals and Mining Act of the Republic of Ghana. A company statement stressed the need to protect these structures to maintain operational efficiency and brine quality, crucial for both the tributor scheme participants and community-managed pans.

The press release, dated December 30, 2024, outlined Electrochem's commitment to enhancing the local salt value chain through its tributor scheme. As part of this initiative, the company has encouraged registered groups and businesses to utilize their allocated lands. Currently, about 50 entities, including businesses, community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and cooperatives, have applied to the scheme.

Out of these applicants, 17 groups have successfully completed the necessary legal documentation, receiving land allocations under the supervision of the Minerals Commission. The remaining groups are in the process of compliance. Electrochem urged approved tributors to focus on maximizing their designated areas, offering technical support and guidance to ensure successful operations.

Additionally, the company called on communities managing the community pans to prioritize maintenance and effective management to optimize yields during the mining season. Electrochem encouraged out-growers to engage directly with the company to safeguard these critical assets, expressing appreciation for their cooperation.
