Eight Fined GH?6,000 Each for Assaulting Koomson, Two Others

Accra: An Accra Circuit Court has fined eight individuals GH?6,000 each for assaulting Mavis Hawa Koomson, the former Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister, along with two others during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun. In the event of non-payment, each person will face 24 months in prison.

According to Ghana News Agency, the court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, issued the sentences after all eight defendants pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime and three counts of assault. The incident took place on July 11, 2025, at the Methodist Church Polling Station amidst the rerun elections in Ablekuma North.

The victims, identified as Madam Koomson, Mr. Majeed Mohammed Sanaa, and Mr. Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, were attacked without provocation but were subsequently rescued by security personnel on site.

The individuals convicted were Mohammed Abubakar, a private security officer; Jijani Mahmud, a driver; Anas Mohammed, an estate developer; Mohammed Hamda, a mechanic; Darko Tsibu Samuel and Ali Saeed, both businessmen; and Musah Muntari, a station manager.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, who led the prosecution, stated that the victims reported the assault to the Odorkor Police. They were then referred to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department, where medical forms were provided for their treatment. The accused were later apprehended and charged, despite initially denying the allegations in their caution statements.

The court emphasized the importance of peaceful elections and urged the convicts to become advocates for non-violence in Ghana's electoral process.
