ECG-WinE and GSI Conduct Career Guidance Programme to Boost Female Engineers Participation

Koforidua: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) - Women in Engineering (WinE), in collaboration with the Gender Social Inclusion (GSI) Unit, has organised a career guidance and counseling programme aimed at highlighting the importance of female engineers in meeting the nation's manpower needs.

According to Ghana News Agency, the event, which took place in Koforidua, was themed 'Unpacking STEM careers: The power of diversity and inclusion in shaping the future'. It brought together parents, teachers, and students to emphasize the role of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields and to foster an understanding of the diverse career opportunities available.

Mr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager/External Communications, representing the Acting Managing Director of ECG, praised the efforts of ECG-WinE. He acknowledged their dedication to empowering young women in STEM, emphasising that their work is transformative. He noted that STEM is about solving real-world problems and creating solutions that improve lives. He highlighted that innovation thrives on diversity, and incorporating different perspectives unlocks new possibilities, underscoring the importance of involving more women in STEM.

Mr Ayiku Ayiku also addressed the role of parents, describing them as the backbone of their daughters' journeys. He stressed that parental encouragement and belief in their children's abilities are crucial for their success.

Alberta Amankwah, President of ECG-WinE, stated that the programme aims to inspire the youth to pursue STEM careers and provide them with the necessary guidance to make informed decisions about their futures. She stressed the significance of diversity and inclusion in STEM fields and urged parents and teachers to support young people's interests in these areas.

Students from both private and public schools participated in interactive sessions, learning about the various career paths available to them, thereby broadening their horizons and encouraging them to explore opportunities in STEM.
