Greater Kumasi: The Ashanti West Region of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully completed the construction of a new 11 kilovolt (kV) feeder line valued at GhS2,762,941.09. This development is set to benefit the Greater Kumasi area by improving electricity distribution and supply reliability.
According to Ghana News Agency, the distribution line stretches from the Afari Substation to Nkawie and was completed in six months. The project involved the installation of 92 new 11-meter poles, three new 12-meter poles, and 11kV headgear. In addition, new conductors, 11kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) load isolators, and other essential materials were incorporated into the construction.
Mr. George Amoah, the General Manager of ECG's Ashanti West Region, stated that the project aims to enhance power supply in several communities within the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality. The newly constructed line is expected to reduce system loss, improve voltage profile, and promote operational efficiency and flexibility in the Nkawie enclave.
The distribution line will supply power to customers in various areas, including Bedabour, Gyankobaa, Mpasatia, Kwame Dwaah, Nkawie, Toase, Wioso, and surrounding environs. Before this project, customers in and around the Nkawie area relied on the Agogo Primary Substation, which occasionally resulted in low voltage due to the extended distance of the distribution line from Atwima Agogo.
Mr. Amoah highlighted the growing demand for electricity in the Nkawie enclave due to ongoing infrastructural developments. He emphasized the urgent need for the new distribution line to deliver quality, reliable, and safe electricity services, thereby fostering socio-economic growth and development in the area.
The existing distribution lines at Agogo, Ntrensere, and Sepaase will also experience relief from future electricity demands. Mr. Amoah revealed that additional construction projects are underway in the Ashanti West Region to further improve power supply. 'We are also constructing another distribution line from the Afari Substation to Sepaase to improve power supply to customers around Afari, Nerebehi, and Ntrensere enclaves,' he added.
