East Gonja: The East Gonja Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has taken proactive steps by engaging youth groups from border communities to prevent violent extremism.According to Ghana News Agency, the event was supported by the European Union as part of the Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism project. This initiative aimed to foster a sense of unity, belongingness, and patriotism among the youth, promoting peace during this year's general election. Mr. Iddrisu Abdul-Latif, East Gonja Municipal Director of NCCE, highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the negative consequences of joining violent extremist groups. He emphasized the need to appreciate the legal framework that prohibits the activities of violent extremist and terrorist groups in the country.Mr. Abdul-Latif pointed out that violent extremism poses a significant threat to global security, noting that extremist groups deliberately target and radicalize young people. This trend becom es more pronounced during election years when political and social tensions are heightened, and youth engagement in political discourse increases.As preparations for the 2024 general election progress, Mr. Abdul-Latif urged the public to report any suspicious acts of terrorism to security agencies to protect the community from threats. He stressed the importance of vigilance in maintaining public safety.Additionally, Mr. Abdul-Rashid Abubakari, a resource person at the event, guided participants on national cohesion and peaceful coexistence. He emphasized the importance of living harmoniously, encouraging unity and support among individuals regardless of political, social, ethnic, or religious backgrounds. Mr. Abubakari remarked, "We must not allow our few differences to destroy the numerous good things we have in common."
