DWM Calls for Action Against Gender Stereotypes to Accelerate Equality

Accra: Developing Women for Mobilization (DWM), a not-for-profit organization, has issued a call to action urging society to challenge stereotypes, combat discrimination, and question biases as part of efforts to accelerate progress towards gender equity and equality.

According to Ghana News Agency, DWM released a message in celebration of International Women's Day, signed by its founder, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings. The message emphasized the importance of taking concrete steps to advance women's rights and influence their progression in society. The organization believes that the proposed Affirmative Action and Gender Equity Act 2024, along with strategic interventions from stakeholders, could significantly speed up progress in this area.

The statement highlighted that although women have made notable strides, the pace remains gradual. The Act, which seeks to promote gender equality and empower women by addressing systemic barriers in Ghanaian society, is expected to be a catalyst for women's development.

The United Nations Global Gender Gap Report and the World Economic Forum's 2024 report indicate that at the current rate, achieving full gender parity and equality will take until the year 2158, approximately 133 years from now. DWM expressed optimism that the enactment of the Affirmative Action law would hasten progress towards this goal.

DWM reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for women's development and envisioned a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination, striving for an environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. The organization expressed solidarity with various groups, large-scale bodies, and philanthropic entities dedicated to supporting and advancing the well-being of women and girls.

Founded in 1982, DWM has been at the forefront of advocating for gender equality and empowering women in Ghana, working continuously to foster positive change and empower women and girls within communities.
