Driver Remanded for Possession of 120 Slabs of Suspected Narcotic Drugs

Accra: A 23-year-old taxi driver, who was arrested for possessing 120 slabs of plant material suspected to be narcotic drugs, has been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court.

According to Ghana News Agency, Ernest Mohammed Agyir is suspected to have been trafficking the substances without lawful authority when he was apprehended at the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout on June 2, 2025. Agyir reportedly informed the police that he was contracted by a man named Abdul Shakur Osman to deliver the 120 slabs of the alleged narcotic drugs to him.

Agyir has been charged with the unlawful control of narcotic drugs, though his plea was reserved by the court. Presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, the court ordered Agyir not to interfere with police investigations, which are expected to lead to the arrest of the alleged owner of the drugs. Agyir is scheduled to reappear in court on June 23, 2025.

The prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Abel Amanie, informed the court that the complainants were personnel of the National Highway Patrol Department. Chief Inspector Amanie detailed that Agyir was a taxi driver operating out of Agona Swedru in the Central Region. On June 2, 2025, personnel from the National Highway Patrol, while on duty along the Accra-Tema Motorway and its environs, stopped a taxicab with registration number GW 9832-22, driven by the accused.

A search of the taxi uncovered three fertilizer sacks containing a total of 120 compressed slabs of 'plant material' suspected to be narcotic drugs, according to the prosecution. During interrogation and in his investigation caution statement, Agyir admitted knowledge of the drugs found in his car. However, he identified Abdul Shakur Osman as the individual who contracted him for the delivery.

The prosecution stated that the exhibits are being forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for testing, and investigations are ongoing.
