Accra: Nana Nkwantabisa III, Kontihene of Twifo Traditional Area, has urged the government to declare a state of emergency in Twifo Atti Morkwa District, citing the escalating menace of illegal mining (galamsey) and its devastating social consequences. He warned that the surge in unlawful mining activities in Twifo Nyenase has triggered alarming social challenges, including rising cases of teenage pregnancies and drug abuse.
According to Ghana News Agency, only decisive action such as a state of emergency could effectively address the effects of galamsey on the people. Responding to the chief's concerns, Mr. Isaac Yawson, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti Morkwa, said the District Security Council had already arrested one person linked to illegal mining and confiscated seven pumping machines, now in police custody.
Mr. Yawson further appealed to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to deploy Blue Water Guards to the district and to push for legislation banning the importation of illegal mining equipment, particularly 'chanfan' machines, to curb further exploitation of resources.
