AYENSUANO: Madam Josephine Awuku Ansaa Nkoom, the District Chief Executive for Ayensuano in the Eastern Region, has applauded farmers in the area for their efforts in ensuring food sustainability despite climate change challenges. She said climate change had posed significant challenges to agriculture, threatening food security and livelihoods, but through the innovative solutions by farmers of the district, the impact was not much felt in the area.According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Nkoom praised the efforts during an interview at Dokrochiwa. She acknowledged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government administration, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for rolling out interventions to help farmers gain access to finance, extension services, and reduce post-harvest losses that hindered their productivity.She highlighted several initiatives such as the Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development, and the provision of pesticides, fertilizers, and research investments whi ch supplied crops capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions. The district received notable support under the Planting for Export and Rural Development, with a total of 29,442 oil palm seedlings provided to farmers.A total of 222 farmers, comprising 193 males and 29 females, benefited from the seedling distribution. This support aimed at empowering farmers and promoting a more inclusive and gender-balanced agricultural sector within the district. It strives for equal gender balance and representation across all sectors of the district's economy.Madam Nkoom emphasized the government's commitment to promoting export-oriented crop initiatives, expressing confidence in the district's path towards diversifying its agricultural sector and enhancing the income-generating potential of farmers. Additionally, she noted the crucial assistance of a government-provided warehouse through the Ministry of Special Development Initiative, which would help in storing food products and reducing wastage.She appealed for further support in the form of irrigation systems and the posting of extension officers to assist farmers in adapting to climate change. Madam Nkoom also urged the electorate to vote for the NPP government in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections to continue building a prosperous future for the district and the nation.
