Court Orders Temporary Closure of Shops Over Sale of Expired Products

According to ghana news agency:wusu, the Presiding Judge, issued the directive after Madam Nukunu pleaded not guilty to all charges leveled against her. In addition to the closure order, Madam Nukunu was granted bail in the sum of GHS50,000 with two sureties and is expected to reappear in court on July 31, 2025, after being charged for the possession and distribution of food products deemed unwholesome.

Prosecuting, Mr. Selorm Agbesi, representing the Environmental Health Department, told the court that Madam Nukunu operated multiple shops and warehouses without valid Business Operating Permits. He explained that an intelligence tip from residents in Nyive, a border community near Togo, led to the discovery that her employees were distributing expired carbonated soft drinks to unsuspecting members of the public.

Upon receiving the report, a task force from the Environmental Health Unit conducted a swift operation on June 08, during which a local chief intervened and ordered the seizure of the remaining expired products as evidence. Further investigations revealed that Madam Nukunu owned an additional retail outlet at Dave Junction, as well as a private warehouse located within her residence in the Dave community. A detailed inspection uncovered several expired beverages on display and in storage.

Mr. Agbesi added that repeated invitations to Madam Nukunu to report for questioning were ignored, and she became confrontational, using offensive language and obstructing health officers during the course of their duties. The case has been adjourned to July 31, as the Environmental Health Department continues its investigations.
