Accra: The Ghana Police Service is investigating an alleged assault on a police officer by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during a protest against the suspension of the Chief Justice. A viral video from the protest suggested Mr. Afenyo-Markin assaulted the officer, prompting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to request Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to release him for questioning.According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin reported to the police on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, to assist investigations. Police have also launched an inquiry into a petition from Mr. Afenyo-Markin, alleging he was assaulted by the officer involved.Both investigations are ongoing, and the public will be updated as the case progresses, the Police Service has said. On Monday, May 5, 2025, the New Patriotic Party, leading a coalition of political parties, protested the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.President John Dramani Mahama received multiple petitions from the public calling for h er removal, triggering the demonstration.
