SUNYANI: Spontaneous celebrations and the sound of firecrackers marked the New Year festivities in Sunyani, where churches and pubs were filled to capacity as residents welcomed 2025. The celebrations on the night of December 31st featured excited worshippers dressed in white and merrymakers indulging in music and fireworks.
According to Ghana News Agency, church auditoriums across the regional capital were packed with individuals expressing gratitude for the past year through songs and praise. Notably absent this year were the traditional prophetic revelations that often accompany New Year celebrations. Instead, churches focused on worship and praise as they ushered in 2025.
Meanwhile, nightlife at popular spots such as Rex and Night Market was bustling, with fireworks displays and food vendors taking advantage of the festive atmosphere. Vendors like Fati, a well-known porridge seller, reported increased profits due to high patronage during the celebrations. The demand for firecrackers and toy guns was so high that some shop owners experienced shortages, as noted by Stephen Kunsu, a shop owner at Rex.
The celebration extended to major drinking bars and pubs along the Sunyani-Abesim stretch, which were also filled with revelers enjoying music and live bands. Even as late as 12:30 AM, young people continued to arrive at these venues to partake in the festivities. One celebrant at the 'Standford Bridge' pub shared that they had come to continue the celebration after attending a church vigil earlier in the night.
