Broken Culvert Cuts Off Community From Healthcare Access

Accra: A broken culvert along the Varemperi-Vieri-Wehiau road in the Wa West District has isolated its immediate communities from accessing healthcare services at the Vieri Health Centre. The disruption predominantly affects pregnant women, children, and the elderly, who are now unable to reach essential medical services.

According to Ghana News Agency, the incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, July 13, 2025, also obstructing traders from Varemperi, Wa, and surrounding areas from reaching the market at Vieri via the Wa-Varemperi-Vieri route. Currently, motorists from Wa Municipality and other regions must take an alternative route through the Wa-Kpongu-Siiru-Vieri road to access Vieri and Wechiau, the Wa West District capital.

The situation poses an additional risk as the Siiru dam often overflows during the rainy season, potentially making the alternative route impassable. Fatawu Dong, a Varemperi resident, highlighted the broader implications, noting that farmers are unable to access their fields, and teachers and other workers commuting from Wa to Vieri are stranded due to the collapsed structure.

Annetus Tanzu Ziembo, the Assembly Member for the Vieri Electoral Area, mentioned that while community members have created a temporary path, it is unsustainable, especially with impending rains. Richard Wulo, the Wa West District Chief Executive, assured residents of an imminent solution and has contacted the Department of Feeder Roads to expedite repairs on the culvert. Additionally, the GNA observed that two other culverts along the route have been partially damaged, necessitating urgent attention to prevent further isolation of the communities.
