Bretuo Royal Family Announces Passing of Asante-Mamponghene to Asantehene

Kumasi: The Bretuo royal family of Asante Mampong has formally informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the passing of Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Paramount Chief of the Asante Mampong traditional area. The announcement was made on Monday, April 28, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, a traditional delegation led by Nana Afrakoma Dufie, the queen mother of Asante Mampong, conveyed the news to the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace. This was done in accordance with the Asante customs and traditions. The queen mother announced that Dasebre Osei Bonsu II joined his ancestors on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the age of 86.

Privately known as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, Daasebre Osei Bonsu was born on December 31, 1939. He was an alumnus of Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon. Before his ascension to the Silver Stool, he was a lawyer by profession and served as the Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

During his 26-year reign, Daasebre Osei Bonsu played a role in facilitating development within the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area and was recognized for his commitment to fostering peace and stability. Following the announcement, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II directed the Mampong traditional council to observe customary rites, including the ceremonial beating of drums, to formally announce the chief’s passing, as mandated by tradition.
