Bono Minister Calls for Byelaw to Address Commercial Sex Work

Sunyani: Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister, has announced that he has directed the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to enact a byelaw aimed at curbing the increasing trend of commercial sex work in the municipality. He emphasized that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) was also collaborating with the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to apprehend and prosecute those involved in these activities.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Regional Minister mentioned that the RCC, along with key stakeholders, is implementing strategic measures to reduce the influx of sex workers into the regional capital. Mr. Akwaboa acknowledged the challenges ahead but assured that the RCC would work effectively with other stakeholders to combat sex work and other societal issues. He also urged media support to address the rising trend of drug abuse and trafficking among the youth in the municipality.

Mr. Akwaboa made these remarks in response to questions about the RCC’s actions to tackle commercial sex work during a media interaction in Sunyani. He described the situation as concerning and called for a collective approach to address drug abuse and commercial sex work activities, noting that the RCC alone cannot manage these issues.

He highlighted the difficulty in identifying commercial sex workers on the streets but pointed out that those operating in brothels and recognized locations can be more easily identified and dealt with. Nonetheless, Mr. Akwaboa expressed confidence that with the assistance of the NIB, the growing commercial sex activities in the capital could be controlled.
