Accra: The Ministry of Roads and Highways has condemned the installation of a billboard at the Flowerpot Interchange, describing it as a violation of national advertisement regulations.
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Mr. Yasir Ahmed Yartey, Head of the Ministry's Public Relations Unit, indicated that the billboard contravened provisions outlined in the Ghana Standards Authority's 'Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs' (GS 847:2019), specifically Section 5. Furthermore, the statement highlighted that the billboard breaches sections 11 and 15 of Act 740, along with Section 188 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180).
The Ministry's statement also referenced a separate press release from the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), which disclaimed any association with the billboard and cautioned against the unauthorized use of its logo. In response to the situation, the Ministry has tasked the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly with coordinating with the Department of Urban Roads to ensure the immediate removal of the billboard.
The Ministry emphasized the importance of collaboration between all Assemblies and the relevant National Road Agencies prior to issuing permits for advertisements or notices along road corridors. It also called upon the Advertising Association of Ghana to enforce its code of conduct concerning the erection of outdoor advertising structures.
Reaffirming its commitment to road safety, the Ministry stressed the importance of protecting public infrastructure for the benefit of all road users.
