Berekum East Municipal Assembly Approves President’s Nominee Amid Tensions

Berekum: The Berekum East Municipal Assembly has approved the President's Nominee, Hajia Fatimatu Abubakar, as the Berekum Municipal Chief Executive. The decision was reached after a unanimous vote by the 38-member assembly, who cast their ballots under the supervision of the Electoral Commission in Berekum, located in the Bono Region.

According to Ghana News Agency, the election also saw Mr. Prince Adade, the Assembly Member for Kutre Number Two Electoral Area, elected as the Presiding Member. He secured 33 'yes' votes after his opponent, Bright Yamoah, the Assembly Member for the Awerempe Electoral Area, withdrew from the contest.

However, the process was nearly disrupted by a misunderstanding between Mr. Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, the Member of Parliament for Berekum East Constituency, and Mr. Kwaku Hinneh, the Berekum East Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The disagreement centered around the participation of certain government appointees in the election, whom some party members alleged were not affiliated with the NDC in the constituency. The situation was quickly diffused by the police, allowing the election to proceed.

In her acceptance speech, Hajia Abubakar expressed her gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for her nomination and thanked the Assembly Members for confirming her appointment. She committed to collaborating with all stakeholders, including the Assembly Members and traditional authorities, to promote the development of the municipality.
