Apremdo Chief Urges Political Commitment to Revive Dormant Market

Apremdo: Nana Egya Kwamina XI, Chief of Apremdo in the Western Region, has called for stronger political will to activate the Apremdo Market to boost local economic growth. He noted that political factors, including partisanship and neglect, appeared to be impeding the growth and activation of the market, describing the situation as disappointing.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Apremdo Market, built nearly 20 years ago, remains unused, resulting in wasted public resources and missed opportunities to enhance local trade and livelihoods. In an interview, Nana Egya Kwamina XI questioned why a national emblem such as the Jubilee Park was converted into a market while the Apremdo Market had been left to lie idle, denying the community economic revival.

He emphasised that markets were critical to community development and economic empowerment, particularly for women traders. The chief urged the municipal authority to take bold and beneficial steps to operationalise the market by improving infrastructure such as drainage, security, taxi ranks, and bus services to stimulate rapid economic growth in the area.

He further observed that Ghana's political divide and polarization often hinder development projects, citing the Apremdo Market as a victim of political patronage and clientelism, where resources are allocated based on political allegiance rather than community needs. According to him, the market's prolonged dormancy stems from a lack of enforcement and commitment by government officials to prioritise it despite its potential.

Nana Egya Kwamina XI therefore renewed his call for government attention and collaborative development efforts to unlock the market's potential and improve the socio-economic fortunes of Apremdo and neighbouring communities.
