Akatsi South MP Presents GHS100,000 to Rainstorm Disaster Victims

Accra: Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has taken a significant step in aiding victims of a devastating rainstorm that recently struck the Akatsi South Municipality in the Volta Region. He has donated GHS2,000 each to the affected individuals, amounting to a total of GHS100,000, in an effort to provide relief to those rendered homeless by the calamity.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Daniel Gidi, the Akatsi South Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), revealed that there are plans to extend further support to those severely affected by the storm. "We have conducted a thorough assessment to ascertain the exact number of residents who were affected," Mr Gidi stated, indicating a proactive approach in the aftermath of the disaster.

The rainstorm, which occurred on Sunday, March 30, caused extensive damage by destroying giant billboards, uprooting trees and electricity poles, and leaving individuals with minor injuries. The storm affected more than 315 people, including numerous households, underscoring the urgent need for relief efforts.

Prior to this cash donation, Mr Ahiafor had already contributed 70 bundles of roofing sheets and 1,700 bags of cement, with assistance from various partners. During the presentation ceremony, he expressed his gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his support in facilitating the cash donation. Mr Ahiafor also assured that more aid would be mobilised for those yet to benefit from the relief efforts.

He called upon the public and philanthropic organisations to join in alleviating the plight of the victims, emphasizing the need for collective action. The event was attended by key figures, including Mr Daniel Dagba, the Municipal Chief Executive of Akatsi South, regional and municipal officials of NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, assembly members, and other stakeholders.

Beneficiaries who spoke to the Ghana News Agency expressed their appreciation to Mr Ahiafor and the leadership of Parliament for the timely intervention and support, highlighting the positive impact of these efforts on their recovery.
