Accra: Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, has emphasized the essential role of the media in informing the public about parliamentary activities. He assured that the House is committed to enhancing the capacity of journalists covering its proceedings to strengthen their understanding and reporting on parliamentary processes.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Djietror expressed Parliament's dedication to empowering members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) by providing training that deepens their knowledge. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and accountability in Ghana's democratic processes. Mr. Djietror made these remarks during the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop for the PPC in Accra over the weekend.
The Clerk to Parliament highlighted the necessity for the media to exercise due diligence by accurately and objectively reporting on parliamentary business, enabling the public to make informed decisions. The workshop, themed 'Enhancing the Image of Parliament through the Towering Role of the Media,' offered a platform for the PPC to reassess their work and improve national conversations and policy interventions.
Discussions at the workshop covered topics such as the Evolution and Functions of Parliament, Standards and Ethics in Parliament, Parliamentary Reporting Guidelines, and Rules Governing Parliamentary Business. Mr. Frank Afriyie, NDC Member of Parliament for Afadjato South, praised the PPC for their unbiased and objective reportage over the years, emphasizing that issues in Parliament often arise from partisan indiscretion among members.
Mr. Afriyie urged the media to focus more on government business rather than the theatrics of the Minority side, asserting that the Majority understands the rationale behind government policies and can better explain them to the public. Meanwhile, Mr. Sammi Awuku, NPP Member of Parliament for Akuapim South, commended the media for scrutinizing parliamentary work and shaping public perceptions.
Mr. Simon Agianab, Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, praised the Media Relations Department of the Parliamentary Service for facilitating the event's organization and pledged the PPC's commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent reporting on parliamentary work.
