Africa’s Housing Solutions Rooted in Local Innovations

Algiers: Africa does not need to import solutions to address its housing challenges, asserts Mr. Prosper Hoetu, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Homeownership Fund (NHF). He emphasized the continent's ability to leverage local materials and technology to provide affordable housing. Mr. Hoetu shared these insights at the 44th Annual General Meeting of the Shelter Afrique Development Bank in Algiers, Algeria, under the theme 'Strengthening Africa's Housing Sector: Local Solutions to Global Challenges.'

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Hoetu presented on 'Enhanced Housing Policies and Adoption of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies - Case Studies from Ghana.' He highlighted the NHF's role in pioneering practical innovations and strategic policy reforms in Ghana's affordable housing sector. These efforts align with President John Dramani Mahama's vision to advance inclusivity and sustainability in homeownership.

Mr. Hoetu detailed the Fund's innovative financing strategies, which include public-private partnerships and green finance initiatives. He noted that the government is committed to fostering inclusive and climate-resilient housing, targeting vulnerable groups, women, and low-income earners to facilitate homeownership opportunities. The NHF is also engaging in Shelter Afrique's Viral Module Assessment to develop a comprehensive affordable housing strategy.

Madam Selma Haddedi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, addressed Africa's rapid urbanization, with urbanization rates increasing from 15 percent in 1960 to 40 percent in 2010, and projected to hit 60 percent by 2050. She underscored the potential for wealthier consumer markets and stronger trade networks, contingent on urgent infrastructure investment, especially in affordable housing and climate risk mitigation. Madam Haddedi reaffirmed the AU's commitment to collaborate with the Shelter Afrique Development Bank on governance, policy, and sustainable funding to shape the future of African cities.
