Beijing: Some selected African and Caribbean journalists attending this year's Seminar for Senior Management of Mainstream Media have advocated for the emulation of China's governance and media content model to spur socio-economic development in African countries.
According to Ghana News Agency, the journalists emphasized the need for African media landscapes to be monitored to prevent media polarization, which often leads to fragmented discourse detrimental to national cohesion and holistic growth. They highlighted that China's political governance is characterized by a centralized and multi-level structure led by the Communist Party of China (CCP), which balances broad social voices with efficient policy execution and resource allocation.
Mr. Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager for the Ghana News Agency, noted the importance of prioritizing state interests over individual or party interests. He stressed the need for strategic planning and long-term development frameworks similar to China's approach to governance.
China's model provides a framework focused on stability, meritocratic leadership, and social order, contrasting with the Western focus on electoral democracy and individual freedoms. Mr. Everton Barnes, a Caribbean journalist, praised China's selfless leadership and the country's development, citing infrastructure, cleanliness, and discipline as aspects worth emulating.
The journalists recognized that China's governance system, media control, and disciplined workforce contribute to its appeal to global observers and investors. They noted the distinct advantages and trade-offs of different governance systems, with China's model prioritizing stability and growth.
China's media is tightly controlled by CCP and state bodies, ensuring centralized oversight through censorship across all forms of media. This control is part of maintaining political stability and managing discourse.
The discipline ingrained in Chinese culture and workforce, along with strategic governance and a large domestic market, are seen as key factors in China's rapid economic growth and global influence. The journalists advocated for adopting aspects of China's governance to drive sustainable growth in their respective regions.
