Nuremberg: In a fresh protest against the planned culling of healthy baboons, a number of activists glued themselves to the ground outside Nuremberg Zoo on Sunday. Around 20 to 25 people lay down on the ground in front of the entrance at midday, a police spokeswoman said. Most of them eventually got up and moved to the side after being asked to do so by the police, but five people glued themselves to the ground.
According to Ghana News Agency, special forces arrived to remove them using solvents. One person then freed themself. The emergency services then carried the activists away. The police are now investigating them for offences against the right of assembly, which are administrative offences.
Activists have already protested at the zoo several times in the past, including chaining themselves to the monkey enclosure. On Saturday, numerous people also demonstrated peacefully in Nuremberg city centre against the zoo's plans.
The zoo announced in February 2024 that it intended to kill some of its Guinea baboons because the group had become too large for the enclosure. According to the city zoo, it has been trying unsuccessfully for many years to reduce the size of the group, for example, through contraception and by transferring animals to other facilities.
