Accra: Two individuals, Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah, have been sentenced to 10 years of hard labor each by the Nalerigu Circuit Court for their involvement in the possession of 1,195 boxes of Tramadol. The sentencing follows their guilty plea to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of restricted drugs without lawful authority.
According to Ghana News Agency, the court, under the leadership of Mr. Francis Asobayire, imposed an additional fine of 5,000 penalty units on each of the convicts, amounting to GHC60,000.00. Failure to pay this fine will result in an additional 10 years of imprisonment for each individual. Following the verdict, Iddrisu and Braimah were transferred to the Gambaga local prison to commence their sentences.
The other four individuals initially arrested – Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik – were released due to a lack of evidence linking them to the crime. The arrests were made in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission in the North East Region on September 18, 2025, at Gbintiri near Nalerigu. The suspects were found in possession of 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg, known as ‘Red,’ which is a restricted drug.
The police intercepted two trucks, with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14, which had been loaded in Sankase, Togo, and were en route to Gbintri. Upon investigation, 100 boxes of Tramadol were traced back to Iddrisu and Braimah, who had also hidden over 4,500 packs of the drug in 25 five-litre yellow gallons.
The police have applauded the efforts of the North East Region community, particularly the Nalerigu Youth Association, for their cooperation in the arrest and prosecution process. They issued a warning to individuals involved in illegal drug activities, stating that those caught will face the full extent of the law.
