Sekondi: A Spanish patrol vessel named 'Rel¡mpago' has docked at the Sekondi Naval Base in the Western Region, marking a significant step in the Spanish Navy's initiative to bolster maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
According to Ghana News Agency, this scheduled stopover is part of the European Union's (EU) Coordinated Maritime Presence in the Gulf of Guinea, designed to support maritime surveillance and environmental awareness activities in partnership with the Ghana Navy. The vessel, having traversed the waters of Angola, Cameroon, Gabon, and Benin, is set to continue its journey to Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Mauritania from Sekondi.
The primary mission of the Spanish patrol vessel is to enhance security in the Gulf of Guinea, promoting cooperation between the EU and West African nations in their efforts to combat piracy, drug trafficking, illegal transhipment of fisheries, and marine pollution.
Mr. Angel Lossada Torres-Quevedo, the Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, emphasized Spain's commitment to supporting Ghana's defense and initiatives in the Gulf of Guinea during his interaction with the Western Regional Minister and Ghana Navy officials. He highlighted the importance of global cooperation in addressing critical issues such as maritime security and climate change.
The Ambassador noted that the visit underscores the strengthening partnership between the Ghana Navy and the Spanish Navy, with a focus on enhancing maritime cooperation and training for both nations. He remarked on the necessity of collaborative efforts to address shared challenges, stating, "We are neighbors, we are having the same border problems, and the world today is not a world of isolated states so we have to work together to have a world that is manageable, where we can live in peace, and that is our common interest."
Western Regional Minister Mr. Joseph Nelson commended the Spanish government's support to the Region and Ghana as a whole, advocating for the continuation of such cooperation. He highlighted the longstanding collaboration between Ghana and Spain and acknowledged the benefits derived from it, including scholarships for students at Takoradi Technical University and training for the Petroleum Hub.
Mr. Nelson stressed the significance of such partnerships for the Region, especially with the presence of the Western Naval Command and the increasing relevance of maritime security. He expressed appreciation for the collaboration between the two countries, stating that it is "very refreshing for us."
During the visit, the Regional Minister and security personnel toured the vessel. Additionally, the Spanish Ambassador, the Ship's Captain, and crew members paid a courtesy visit to Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Area, at his palace in Essikado.
