Prestea: Mr Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Prestea Huni-Valley constituency, has dismissed claims that drugs enhance learning. He indicated that students who depended solely on drugs to study had destroyed their academic career and were currently out of the main system.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Cudjoe advised, “As students, whether your parents have or have not, that does not give you the opportunity to abuse drugs. Concentrate on your studies, make better grades, or develop your skills so you can contribute your quota to the society. Let us all say no to drugs.”

Speaking at a major awareness campaign at the Huni-Valley Senior High School, the MP said drug abuse had become a national security threat because parents, communities, and the nation spent much money to develop these children but at the end the benefits were lost because they become drug addicts.

The event, dubbed ‘Break the Chain’ say no to drugs, don’t let it consume you, was organized by the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) in Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality with support from the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF).

The MP emphasized, “Parents who have toiled thinking that one day they will get something out from their children end up being disappointed because of drug abuse. So, parents and society are losing.”

“Some students in the boarding house bring hard drugs to school and others are making huge profits out of this business. As parents, teachers, law makers and security agencies, I suggest we work extra hard and close all these loopholes to eliminate the menace in our society,” he remarked.

Explaining more about the programme, Miss Franklina Baffour Awuah, the President of the NASPA in Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly, said the intention was to educate and inspire the young ones who would be the future leaders to take up the mantle and disassociate themselves from drug abuse.

She mentioned that students from the three Senior High Schools in the Municipality, namely Prestea Senior High Technical School, Saint Augustine’s SHS, and Huni-Valley SHS attended the programme.

Miss Awuah, who is also the Vice President for the Western and Western North Regions of the National Service Personnel, expressed appreciation to the GFGF for the assistance and encouraged students struggling with addiction to seek medical support to enable them to get back on track.
