Accra: The time for transformation is now, President John Dramani Mahama has said, urging all Ghanaians to embrace economic transformation and unlock the full potential of their beloved country. "Let us work together to build a resilient, competitive and prosperous Ghana," President Mahama said in his keynote address at the opening of the National Economic Dialogue in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama emphasized that the road ahead will not be easy, but it is a necessary journey. He highlighted that the responsibility for rebuilding Ghana's economy is not just the government's burden but a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of every Ghanaian.
The President stressed the importance of consensus building and consultation, stating that his administration would focus on these principles. He expressed a desire to be remembered as the President who provided the platform for inclusive national development.
President Mahama announced a vision for a new era of bold transformation, economic expansion, and limitless opportunities for Ghana. Central to this vision is the implementation of a 24-hour economy designed to create sustainable jobs and position Ghana competitively on the global stage.
He highlighted that thriving economies worldwide have embraced continuous productivity, suggesting that Ghana should also transition from a traditional economy to one where opportunities are not limited by time.
Under this initiative, the administration plans to offer incentives and tax breaks to manufacturers and businesses that extend their operational hours, promoting a shift-based employment system to expand job opportunities. Key sectors like manufacturing, retail, healthcare, logistics, and financial services are to be strengthened to support continuous operation.
The government is committed to investing in infrastructure, energy, and security to ensure a safe and efficient environment for businesses and workers. Enhancements in transportation systems will facilitate the movement of workers and goods around the clock. Fair labor practices will be implemented to protect workers' rights while fostering productivity and economic growth.
President Mahama commended Dr. Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, for his efforts in organizing the Dialogue. The National Economic Dialogue, themed "Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together," aims to communicate the true state of Ghana's economy, develop a homegrown fiscal consolidation program, and highlight key structural reforms and policy priorities essential for resetting the economy.
