Accra: Mr Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, New Patriotic Party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, has been granted bail after reporting to the Police over alleged illegal mining. He was cautioned on alleged offences, including undertaking mining operations without a licence, pollution of water bodies, and unauthorised entry into a forest reserve.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Antwi-Boasiako's appearance followed an invitation by the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). A press release signed by Superintendent of Police Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of Public Affairs Unit of CID, confirmed that Mr Antwi-Boasiako reported to CID Headquarters on Monday, May 26, 2025, at midday to assist with investigations.
The statement noted that he was accompanied by a team of lawyers led by former Attorney General Mr Godfred Dame. It added that Mr Antwi-Boasiako cooperated fully with police during the investigation, gave his statement, and was granted bail to report to police on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 1500 hours. The release assured that further developments would be communicated to the public.
