Nkawie: In a bid to improve access to quality healthcare and reduce congestion at referral facilities in the Ashanti Region, the people of Nkawie are mobilising resources to construct an ultramodern Accident and Emergency (A and E) block at the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital.
According to Ghana News Agency, the proposed two-storey facility is expected to accommodate approximately 20 beds at full capacity, with provisions for handling mass casualty situations. It will also feature specialized units including trauma and resuscitation areas, suturing room, cast-in, a special ward, and an intensive care unit. Situated along the busy Kumasi-Bibiani-Nyinahin Highway, the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital serves as a crucial healthcare center, receiving numerous emergency cases and referrals daily.
Mr. Paul Nana Kwabena Aborampah Mensah, a member of the Nkawie Homecoming Committee, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the initiative was inspired by the newly installed chief of Nkawie, Oheneba Nana Kwame Akoto. Upon his ascension, the Chief identified the absence of a dedicated A and E block as a critical gap requiring immediate action. As part of his development agenda, the Chief constituted a five-member Homecoming Committee to spearhead the project. The team, along with the hospital’s management, architect, and contractor, has since inspected the proposed site for the structure.
Mr. Aborampah Mensah revealed that the committee has reached out to Nkawie natives in the diaspora and is planning a grand homecoming event during Easter 2026 to rally support for the project. He appealed to all indigenes, both at home and abroad, to contribute towards the noble cause.
Dr. Roberto Frank Fiifi Otchere, Medical Superintendent of the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital, explained that the facility currently has a 68-bed capacity, with only four designated for emergency cases which is grossly inadequate given the hospital’s location and patient load. ‘It is sad when people come and there is no space to serve them. I believe when these new emergency wards come on board, it will be a game changer,’ he stated. He added that the new block is designed to mirror the Accident and Emergency Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), which will significantly improve patient stabilization before possible referrals.
An added benefit of the project is the inclusion of an administrative office complex, which will help decongest the Out-Patients Department (OPD) and facilitate faster service delivery to more patients.
