MTN MoMo Limited Assures Public of Safe, Secured Mobile Money Systems

Accra: MTN Mobile Money Limited (MoMo), a subsidiary of MTN Ghana responsible for Mobile Financial Services, has assured the public of secured and safe mobile money systems. This comes after Mobile Money Limited noted recent social media messages claiming that MTN systems have been compromised due to a cybersecurity incident, advising customers to withdraw their funds.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Madam Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, a Senior Manager of Corporate Communications, MTN Ghana, and copied to the agency, said the information was completely misleading, untrue and, in some instances, potentially mischievous. ‘We assure all our valued customers that the cybersecurity incident has not impacted on the operation or security of our mobile money systems,’ it added.

The statement said no customers had lost any of their money because of the cybersecurity incident, and that their MoMo platforms remained safe and secure, with customer funds protected. It said Mobile Money Limited operated with robust security protocols and continuously monitored their environment to enhance system integrity.

The MoMo platform utilised industry-leading security measures, including end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and ongoing monitoring to detect and prevent fraudulent activity, the statement said. It said the company would continue to collaborate closely with regulatory authorities, cybersecurity experts, and partner institutions to uphold the highest safety standards.

‘We appreciate our customers’ concerns and want to reaffirm our commitment to the safety of mobile money services. We urge customers and the public to rely on official channels of Mobile Money Limited and MTN Ghana for authentic and accurate information,’ it said. It re-echoed calls to its valued customers to remain vigilant and avoid disclosing sensitive information such as passwords, PINs, and OTPs via phone, text, messages, or emails,’ it added.

The statement urged customers to contact MTN’s toll-free customer care number at 100, for further engagement.
