Accra: The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed concern over the arrest and remand of Mr. Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to the caucus, the circumstances surrounding his arrest revealed a disturbing pattern of the government weaponizing the judicial system against perceived opponents.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Mr. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Second Deputy Minority Whip and NPP Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, emphasized that the government has reportedly abandoned its constitutional obligations, opting for what they describe as authoritarian consolidation. The statement highlighted issues such as judicial persecution, executive overreach, economic manipulation, and security failures, which they claim are threatening both democracy and development in Ghana.

The statement also highlighted the government’s alleged neglect of pressing national issues, including communal violence in northern Ghana,
which has resulted in loss of life and displacement of thousands. The Minority Caucus criticized the state’s response as characterized by neglect and indifference, urging immediate intervention for affected communities in the north.

Furthermore, the statement called on the Ghana Police Service to ensure the protection of all political actors and to refrain from acting as an alleged tool of the ruling party. It stressed the importance of preserving Ghana’s democracy from fear and intimidation.

Mr. Baffoe, popularly known as ‘Abronye,’ is currently remanded in police custody by an Accra Circuit Court. He faces charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news, with a court appearance scheduled for Friday, September 12, 2025. His plea was not taken in front of the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.
