Media Practitioners Urge MTN Ghana to Protect Customers from MoMo Fraud

Sunyani: Journalists and some media practitioners have called on MTN Ghana to do more to protect their unsuspecting customers against Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud. According to them, the activities of fraudsters, using the MTN MoMo to dupe innocent and unsuspecting customers were assuming alarming proportion in the country and something ought to be done urgently.

According to Ghana News Agency, MTN MoMo is a secure electronic service that enables MTN MoMo wallet holders to store funds, send and receive money, make payments, and do several other transactions simply using their mobile phones. ‘The rates at which we receive complaints from MTN MoMo users about online fraudsters are becoming disturbing,’ Mr Yaw Aboagye Boadi, the General Manager of Sompa FM, a Sunyani-based radio station stated.

Nonetheless, Mr John Sam Arthur, the Bono Regional Correspondent of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation described the MTN MoMo transactions as exceptional saying ‘I now do all my transactions online through my MoMo wallet’. He noted that it was always safe using the MTN MoMo only if the holders remained vigilant and kept their personal codes in secret. The media practitioners made the call when Madam Charity Akosua Darko, the Corporate Affairs Manager of MTN Ghana’s Northern Business District visited some local radio stations in Sunyani.

Mr Obeng Akrofi Asiedu, the Programme’s Manager of Ark FM noted that the online fraudsters were now sophisticated, saying ‘they have even attempted on several occasions to fraud some of us’. He therefore called on the company to partner with the local media and intensify awareness creation about the activities on the fraudsters to protect the vulnerable population.

Mr Kwasi Kumi Boadu, the News Editor at Service Radio asked the company to also do more to improve on its network too. On her part Mad Darko said MTN appreciated and recognised its long-standing relationship with the media and commended the media practitioners for the feedback.

She reminded MoMo wallet holders to always keep their personal codes in secret and endeavour to pick the mobile numbers and accordingly report the suspected fraudsters to the company. ‘The only way that will make it possible for them to defraud you is to give your MoMo wallet codes out and so try as much as possible to keep your personal codes in secret,’ Mad Darko advised.
