Government Urged to Improve Educational Infrastructure for Learning Mathematics

Tamale: Government has been urged to expand and upgrade educational infrastructure in the country to create a conducive environment needed to facilitate the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels. Professor Ibrahim Yakubu Seini, Dean of the Department of Physical Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala Campus, made this call, proposing that teachers should be trained and encouraged to use activity-based learning to create fun while teaching mathematics in schools.

According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Seini delivered these remarks while presenting the 17th professorial inaugural lecture in fulfilment of his appointment as a Professor of Applied Mathematics. The lecture, held in Tamale, was themed 'Beyond Computations: Mathematics is Key to National Development'. Professor Seini emphasized the need for parents to engage their children with simple logical activities at home, highlighting that 'Mathematics is a universal language spoken and understood by everyone, and children must be given the benefit of a good foundation, starting from home'.

Professor Seini stressed the importance of upgrading the knowledge and competence of teachers in mathematics by ensuring they participate in continuous professional development programmes. He further urged the government to ensure that appointees have the requisite expertise and willingness to engage the academia and the research community to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics.
