Tamale: Professor Ibrahim Yakubu Seini, Dean of the Department of Physical Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala, has emphasized the indispensability of mathematics for national development. He articulated that mathematics is crucial in unlocking students' potential and equipping them for future opportunities.

According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Seini made these remarks during the 17th professorial inaugural lecture, which marked his appointment as a Professor of Applied Mathematics in Tamale. He highlighted that mathematics drives innovation and plays a pivotal role in addressing global challenges like climate change, healthcare, and cyber security.

The lecture, themed 'Beyond Computations: Mathematics is Key to National Development,' was attended by various academic stakeholders, including traditional authorities from the Northern Region. Professor Seini emphasized that mathematics opens numerous opportunities across fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, and climate science.

He further explained that mathematics has been integral to human civilization and is fundamental to advances in science, technology, engineering, and philosophy. Professor Seini stressed the importance of bridging gender and diversity gaps by encouraging underrepresented groups to engage in mathematical sciences, fostering a diverse talent pool essential for innovation and inclusive development.

Moreover, he advocated for the establishment of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Model Senior High Schools across the country, asserting that their creation should not adversely impact traditional schools' infrastructure and equipment.

Professor Seini holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, a Master of Science Degree in Control Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, and is the first doctoral student from the Department of Mathematics at UDS, where he earned his doctorate in mathematics in 2011.
