Accra: The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the By-Election for the Akwatia Constituency will take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. The seat became vacant due to the passing of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for the area, on July 7.
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement released by Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC, emphasized that the By-Election will be conducted in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended. The nomination period for potential candidates is set from August 11 to August 13, with submissions accepted between 0900 and 1200 hours, and 1400 and 1700 hours daily at the Demkyembour District Office.
The statement further outlines that the filing fee is GHC10,000.00 per candidate, while female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) are required to pay GHC7,500.00. Interested candidates can download the Nomination Forms from the Commission's website from July 30 to August 13, 2025.
Prospective candidates must ensure their nomination forms are signed by two registered voters as Proposer and Seconder, with the support of 18 other registered voters in the Constituency. The forms should also include the candidate's consent to the nomination and be delivered in quadruplicate to the Returning Officer.
Candidates must also provide two recent bust-sized photographs against a red background, showing their full face and ears, at the time of submitting their completed Nomination Forms.
