Bawku: The Overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has renewed his appeal to President-elect John Dramani Mahama for the establishment of a new region in the Kusaug Traditional Area. The proposed Kusaug Region aims to enhance socio-economic growth and foster peace and unity across the region.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Overlord highlighted the potential benefits of forming a new region that would encompass the administrative districts of Bawku Municipal, Bawku West, Garu, Binduri, Tempane, and Pusiga. He argued that such a move would stimulate economic activities and development in the area. He also urged the incoming government to prioritize the completion of critical infrastructure projects like the Bolgatanga-Pulmakom Road and the Tamne Dam.

The call was made during the Samanpiid festival in Bawku, which also marked the 40th anniversary of Naba Azoka II’s reign as the Overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area. The festival, themed “40 years of selfless leadership, consolidating the peace, unity and development of Kusaug,” served as a platform for the Overlord to address longstanding conflicts and socio-economic challenges facing the community.

The Overlord emphasized the importance of unity among the people of Kusaug, regardless of geographical location, ethnicity, religion, or political beliefs. He encouraged the community to focus on shared interests to make Kusaug an attractive destination in the region and across Ghana. Additionally, he praised the resilience of local farmers and the efforts of security services and media organizations in maintaining peace and sharing information about Bawku.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, in a speech delivered on his behalf, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace in Bawku until the end of his tenure on January 7, 2025. He acknowledged the temporary measures in place, such as the presence of security personnel and the ban on motor riding, but stressed that long-lasting peace would only be achieved through communal harmony.
