Ayawaso East Municipality Makes Strides in Sanitation Management

General

Accra: Mr Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ayawaso East Assembly, has announced significant progress in the municipality’s sanitation management efforts. The Assembly has implemented various measures to enhance cleanliness and public safety in the area, demonstrating a firm commitment to maintaining a healthy environment.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Assembly has engaged 15 additional women sweepers and formed a task force to replace the Youth Employment Agency sweepers, thereby strengthening daily cleaning activities. The enforcement of sanitation by-laws has been strict, leading to the prosecution of 11 offenders, with 8 more cases currently awaiting court proceedings. The “Operation Clean Your Frontage” initiative, supported by Environmental Health Officers and Assembly Members, has resulted in notable improvements in community cleanliness.

Mr Ibrahim highlighted that, despite having only one compactor and several tricycles, the Assembly has ensured regular waste collection and disposal, preventing the accumulation of refuse. Efforts are also underway to clear overgrown areas to enhance safety and environmental health. These initiatives were part of the Assembly’s activities since they took office in May 2025.

Additionally, the Assembly has installed streetlighting lamps in various electoral areas, including Kanda and Ruga, as part of the Electoral Area Project. However, the theft of 35 metal drain covers has raised public safety concerns within the municipality, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Obasanjo Highway, Nima Police Station, and Nima Township.

To address this issue, the Assembly is actively working to replace the stolen drain covers and has already installed 8 sturdy metal slabs in Nima. Increased surveillance and enforcement in collaboration with youth groups aim to regulate the activities of scrap dealers. Furthermore, public education campaigns will be launched to raise awareness about the dangers of theft and encourage the reporting of suspicious activities.
