Accra: The Association of China-Ghana Mining (ACGM) has pledged a generous donation of GHS20,000 to assist Ms. Rosemary Wayo, a Chief Reporter with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), with her medical expenses following a severe road accident last year.
According to Ghana News Agency, the contribution is in response to an appeal from the agency to support the award-winning journalist in receiving specialized medical treatment. Ms. Wayo’s life was irrevocably altered on September 21, 2024, when she was involved in a devastating motor accident near Suhum in the Eastern Region. The incident occurred just a week after she was honored with the Ghana Journalists Association’s Northern Regional awards for Best Reporter in Road Safety and Peace and Conflict Sensitive Reporting.
Ms. Wayo was traveling from Tamale to Accra for a professional training program when the bus she was on collided with a fuel tanker. The crash resulted in the immediate loss of eight lives and left Ms. Wayo with critical injuries. She spent a week
unconscious in the hospital and subsequently underwent spine surgery at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. Currently, she is recovering from lower body paralysis, relying heavily on physiotherapy and medications, while enduring constant severe pain.
Mr. Sean Zhang, Deputy Secretary General of the Association, presented the donation on behalf of its Chairman, Tang ZhenJiang, and Secretary General, Mr. Kevin Chen, expressing their empathy towards Ms. Wayo. He emphasized the Association’s commitment to supporting young individuals who contribute positively to society, helping them achieve their potential for national development. He assured that ACGM would continue to support Ms. Wayo’s recovery so she could return to an active and productive life.
Mr. Tang later expressed to GNA the misfortune of a promising young woman finding herself in such a difficult situation. He reiterated the Association’s dedication to supporting individuals like Ms. Wayo, who show courage and resilience, and encouraged stakehol
ders to join in similar humanitarian efforts.
Mrs. Beatrice Asamani Savage, Director of Editorial at GNA, accepted the donation on behalf of Ms. Wayo, expressing gratitude to the Association. She described Ms. Wayo as an asset to the agency due to her commitment to highlighting the stories of the less privileged. The support, she noted, provides significant relief to both Ms. Wayo and the GNA, with the hope of restoring a valuable life and motivating young journalists by showing that they will not be abandoned in times of hardship.
The ACGM, which unites key Chinese mining entities and services companies in Ghana, was inaugurated in April 2025. It aims to promote responsible mining, industry cooperation, and investment, committing to projects that integrate advanced technologies and promote eco-friendly mining practices, balancing economic growth, ecological protection, and social equity for mutual prosperity.
