Alhaji Muhammed Mumuni Elected Council of State Member for Northern Region

Tamale: Alhaji Muhammed Mumuni, a 75-year-old former Minister of Foreign Affairs under President John Atta Mills, has been elected Member of the Council of State representing the Northern Region. He secured 26 out of the 32 votes to beat three other candidates in the Council of State elections held in Tamale on Tuesday.

According to Ghana News Agency, the defeated candidates were Mr. Richard Andani Yakubu, who received four votes, Mr. Nyande Abdul Raqib who had two votes, and Mr. Adam Hussein who had zero. Alhaji Mumuni, after being declared the winner of the elections by Mr. Lucas Yiryel, the Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, expressed gratitude to the delegates for the confidence reposed in him to serve the region and the country at large.

Alhaji Mumuni is a former Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) and served as a two-term Member of Parliament for the Kumbungu Constituency. He was also the Minister of Employment and Social Welfare under former President Jerry John Rawlings and the Presidential Running-mate on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress in the Election 2004.
